TUCSON, AZ — Jan. 28, 2010 — Now, more than ever, the United States is competing in a global economy that demands innovation. President Obama noted this in his State of the Union when he discussed educating our way to a better economy. To build a strong economy, we must ensure young people are prepared to succeed both in the jobs of today and those that haven’t been created yet. We can do this by fusing the three Rs and the four Cs, which represent the skills (such as critical thinking and problem solving, collaboration, communication and creativity and innovation) required for success in today’s and tomorrow’s world. There are leading districts and schools across the country – from New York to Arizona and Virginia to California – that are already doing this important work. By following these examples and providing world-class educator professional development opportunities, we can guarantee 21st century readiness for every student. In saying that “we need to invest in the skills and education of our people,” President Obama has provided a clear message that policy is the catalyst for change. It has never been more certain that in today’s world, “the best anti-poverty program around is a world-class education,” as President Obama noted. To be world class, every student must graduate prepared for success in an ever-changing world. About the Partnership for 21st Century Skills: P21is a national organization that advocates for 21st century readiness for every student.
