Statement by Ken Kay, President of P21, on the Common Core State Standards Initiative Print
States Must Work to Implement the Standards in a way that Fuses the Three Rs and Four Cs

TUCSON, AZ — June 2, 2010 — P21 congratulates the National Governors Association and Council of Chief State School Officers on issuing the final drafts of the Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts and mathematics. Now, the hard work begins, as states, districts and schools start implementing the standards.

When states begin implementation, we urge them to do so in a way that honors the fusion of the three Rs and four Cs (critical thinking and problem solving, collaboration, communication and creativity and innovation). The states and CCSSO should work together and seek out models from across the country to make this happen.

There are already 14 states that have committed to fusing the three Rs and four Cs within standards, assessments and professional development – they are shining examples of how this can and should be done for English Language Arts and mathematics.

In all, the initiative has been an important and strong step toward ensuring all states have a consistent approach to rigorous standards. P21 will continue to work with our partner states to fuse the three Rs and four Cs within new curricula and assessments that align with the common core standards in English and mathematics. P21 believes this initiative will lead us in the direction of internationally benchmarked standards that ensure 21st century readiness for every student.

We will issue a more detailed analysis of the final standards in the coming weeks.
