North Carolina Standards

North Carolina has made great progress in implementing the visionary new “Future Ready Mission and Goals” approved by the NC State Board of Education last September. During the past nine months the State Board has approved new leadership standards for school administrators and new teacher standards, each aligned to better deliver the 21st century skills students need to be competitive in the global economy. A similar set of superintendent standards and assessments are also in development. The alignment of 21st century skills into North Carolina’s standards and evaluations for teachers, administrators (and soon to be completed for superintendents) ensures the infusion of skills such as distributive leadership, personal responsibility, self-direction, social responsibility and accountability in to the daily routine of every school across the state.

The assessment for school administrators was field tested last spring and a similar instrument for the teacher standards was field tested this summer. Over 23 school districts representing various sizes, geographical areas, and rural and urban districts have volunteered to pilot both instruments simultaneously this fall. By the November launch of the Route 21 website they will have received their procedural training and will be in the midst of a comprehensive pilot which will produce the final field input to fine tune the evaluation tools to be rolled our across the state next fall.
