Maine is committed to providing each student with a quality education that begins before kindergarten and continues through postsecondary experiences. Through a grant from the National Governors’ Association, the Governor of Maine, John Baldacci has demonstrated his commitment to improve access to an equitable education for all students regardless of where they may live in Maine. Commissioner of Education Susan Gendron has led efforts in Maine to redesign education including: supporting literacy and numeracy efforts; expanding the Maine Learning Technology Initiative; revising the standards to ensure that all students are ready for the 21st century after they leave the PreK-20 system; and, adding new graduation requirements that give every student equitable access to courses and instruction. Currently, many students do not have access to rigorous courses due to practices such as tracking and low level courses. All students have a right to an educational system that prepares them for living in the 21st century.
